The 2018 trend for two-seaters is to stay vis-à-vis. What’s important is to remain close or, event better, to be able to look each other in the eyes. Two-seaters are perfectly meeting the contemporary mantra: to be connected and social. They offer a great comfort thanks to the smooth, simple shapes, the light tones and the possibility to personalise them around our needs. The five models we selected are all characterised by smooth, enveloping curves ideal for relaxing and conversations.

The small DayDream sofa designed by Italian-Japanese duo Mist-o for Living Divani definitely promotes interactions and dialogues. Specifically designed for two, it presents an essential and almost primitive design and the typical comfort of daybeds. Its metallic structure is like a loom where a tight net has been placed by a textile studio specialised in binding for interiors and fashion (UN Pizzo). This choice stems from a desire to reinterpret the Hammock Chair by Hans J. Wagner in a contemporary way. It expresses the ancient and artisanal textile tradition and it turns the net into an evocative metaphor about the relationship of those who share it. The weft has different intensities depending on the area and it ensures stability and elegant sitting cushions.

Sergio Bicego, one of Saba Italia’s most promising designers, is the author of Avant-Après. This is a small, rigorous and light sofa that can radically change thanks to its armrest/backrest system designed to revolutionise the way we sit. It’s very easy: the armrest can be taken off and placed as a backrest, offering several comfortable positions. The soft cushions lay on a metallic base covered in fabric and supported by chromium metal feet. To better enjoy the comfort of this small sofa, there is a tiny table made of black walnut wood (available in two different sizes).

A comfortable two-seater that invites people to look each other in the eyes, as the name suggests. It’s Face to Face, a 2-metre sofa by Gordon Guillaumier for historic firm Tacchini. The idea behind it, it’s to reinterpret sofas and make them a space for socialising. To describe his idea, the designer lets an imaginary guest speak: “Sit down next to me. I want to see your face while we speak. I want to see what you think.” The Maltese designer focuses on people. The outcome is two opposed backrests (true protagonists of this sofa) and soft cushions that invite you to sit down and to find that human dimension of looking people in the face, wherever you are.

Here is a modular sofa, ideal for both home interiors and for the contract sector. Antonio Rodriguez designed a collection of tiny sofas, Velour, for La Cividina. It’s a series of leather and fabric sittings that offer solutions for all needs thanks to a wide choice of 57 elements, from simple to more complex ones such as armchairs, sofas, poufs and chaise-longues. Spatial configurations are endless and privacy and intimacy are guaranteed by a flexible and extra slim backrest (not more than 5 cm) available in different dimensions. Comfort is ensured by soft cushions laying on a wooden frame and wrapped by elastic bands and by crushproof stuffing.

Composability is the key word of another 2-seater, a must-have for 2018. Designer Francesco Rota created Plus for Lapalma. Comfort is here associated with soft shapes, obtained thanks to expanded fire-resistant polyurethane with varying intensities. Its modularity allows owners to create classic sofas or combinations of different elements for lounge areas. The key elements characterising this design piece are once again simple but decisive: Screen partitions that can be used as backrests, armrests or tables, and cushions that make this system flexible, versatile and transformable.
