Cushioned chairs, 7 unique models

The back of a chair is important too. Here is a selection of design cushioned chairs with curvy, coloured and graphic backrests.

When choosing cushioned chairs to decorate our living room, studio or bedroom, we tend to focus on their frontal aesthetics. Cushioned chairs are usually placed next to a wall or in a corner and they're mainly used to relax reading a good book or chatting with friends. When unused or left on their own, they may lose their significance. In 2018, design cushioned chairs claim their roles as protagonists in the house. They want to be placed in the middle of a room, showing their backs too: curvy, colourful, graphic and elaborated.

Gaia Giotti, Giona Scarselli and Cristina Razzanelli from studio E-GGS play with customisation and design Iola for Minforms, firm with an ironic spirit. Iola is a modern cushioned chair full of life, with playful, soft yet solid lines. Its main feature is the possibility to personalise the cover, which can be elegant velvet or a simpler fabric with geometric patterns or bright colours. It’s a response to minimal style that combines simple and neat lines with eccentric ‘clothes’.

Dutch design firm Moooi (founded by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers) chose Italian designer Luca Nichetto to reinterpret his own concept of cushioned chair. Canal chair is the result of this partnership. As the name suggests, the chair recalls the world of sailing. Its lines and colours were inspired by the shapes of typical venetian boats docked along the canals. The countless fabric combinations give life to decorations that recall historic boats and abstract contemporary geometric drawings.

2018 is not only about fabrics. Max Divani decided to work on another material and gave birth to Circle, with the help of architects Giuliano and Gabriele Cappelletti. These cushioned leather chairs are characterised by a backrest with an elegant quilted decoration. The artisanal manufacturing embellishes the chair, highlighting its geometric shapes thanks to the use of contrasting colours.

Italian firm Riflessi partnered with designers Stefano Sandonà and Sabrina Bettini to create a collection of cushioned chairs with armrests. Thanks to an innovative printing technique, Sofia chairs have a winding silhouette given by the light reflections on its satin surfaces. This creates a 3D optic illusion, reinforced by the combination of different metals and colours and by sophisticated reflections and shades.

For retro lovers, Carlo Colombo designed Casa A-Round for Trussardi. It’s a collection of vintage cushioned chairs that take inspiration from ‘50s design and reinterpret it in a new contemporary way. The main structure stands out thanks to the energy of its tubular frame. Its overlapping curves envelope the chair, which is covered with an exclusive fabric embellished with the greyhound logo. The curved backrest is harmoniously integrated.

A historic decoration by Danish designer Ole Wanscher has been re-edited by Carl Hansen & Søn to give a classic Nordic touch to our contemporary houses. OW124 Beak Chair is a cushioned chair for living rooms made in durmast or walnut wood and leather with a modern and refined design. The distinct armrests give the name to the chair, while its elegance is due to the wood manufacturing.

If you are looking for 2018 trends in terms of cushioned chairs for dining rooms, Riva 1920 partnered with Australian designer Jamie Durie to create Bungalow Dining Chair. As in the majority of his decorations, the materials and shapes of this piece are inspired by nature. The cushioned chair has a solid wood structure that has been hand-turned, assembled and polished, with leather strings weaved on it. A simple home decoration accessory that recalls outdoor design traditions, turning them into elegant indoor pieces.
