Whilst looking for an unusual take on the latest Milano Design Week – meaning an overall different view on 2017’s design wave – , we ended up knocking on the door of someone able to enhance man’s relationship with everyday objects, whose very role, at least according to him, is to provide “rituals, memories and fantasies”. No wonder his latest works include an outdoor collection meant as an actual ode to normality, and a table lamp named Disarmante (Disarming).

After Federico Peri and Paolo Gonzalo, it is now the turn of Gio Tirotto to take us by hand though an exploration across his galaxy and photographic notes.

1. Your first thought triggered by words “Milano Design Week 2017”.

Light. To me, Euroluce means nothing but a patient wait, since every single time it occurs (goodbye to 2019, Ed.), “everyone” is very keen to challenge and express themselves through the light.

2. The most captivating design item you spotted this year.

Arrangements, no doubt. A brand new lighting fixture designed by Micheal Anastassiades for Flos – a truly exciting blend of high technology and poetic sensitivity.

3. The most gorgeous site-specific installation.

Foundation by Formafantasma at Spazio Krizia. I actually went twice, in order to reflect, enjoy and memorise those images better.

4. The most interesting person you have bumped into.

This is a good question, although everytime you happen to meet thousands of people out there. Well, as for this year, the fate (or the Bar Basso) wanted me to get acquaintance with Antonio Facco: a great designer and a sparkling conversationalist, he surely deserves the “Best Meeting” Prize 2017. I fully believe in the power of such random encounters, them being all but scheduled or foreseeable. For instance, a couple of years ago I accidentally shared a taxi with Vittorio Venezia. What special chit-chats at dawn :)

5. A bad disappointment.

I don’t really know. You see, I generally walk into the Milano Design Week with a smile on my face, it being the most exciting and important time of the whole year. My expectations are so high that I cannot really be “disrespectful” to such event. Anyway, truth to be said, I really struggled to tolerate the ridiculously long queues to enter a few installations… But still, I would better appreciate such a huge design audience, right?

6. Any wishes for next year?

COUNTLESS! I mean, I would love to see EVERYTHING, as I barely manage to visit the whole exhibition properly due to time constraints. To not live some experiences first hand leaves some sort of bad taste in my mouth.

7. Describe your work in one sentence.

I operate to establish a solid connection between thought and communication, the most essential goal of my entire philosophy.
