Linear sofas: 6 minimalist solutions give timeless sophistication a contemporary take
Reminiscent of mid-century’s modern, rational and edged furniture, the following seating ssystem selection is nonetheless highly contemporary
Linear sofas are timeless design icons, and a great fit for both classic and more contemporary habitats. Indeed, modern linear sofas provide a go-to answer when it comes to decor a living room you will never get tired of. Rational sofas successfully manage to mix a contemporary take on aesthetics and functionality with a sophisticated, refined taste: strong of their austere, existentialist and welcoming layout, they make use of precious materials like leather and rare fabrics, and openly evokes their own creators’ creative sensitive and unmatchable authorial mark.
Far from putting it as an average 4-seater sofa, Pietro Lissoni speaks of Saké, one of his most recent works for B&B Italia, as an actual platform built on lightness. “A technological platform, magically suspended in the air like a flying carpet, with cushions added to enclose the borders, and finally, legs to ground it.” Marking the starting point of the Milanese architect and designer’s fruitful collaboration with the Italian leading furniture company, Safé boasts a contemporary silhouette aimed at reflecting the deeply modern brand philosophy. Such 4-seater sofa system is defined by slender legs and clean lines, paired with smooth armrests and all-embracing backseat. It also features a chaise longue, which can be added as a modular unit or simply left autonomous. The sofa’s quilted details and wide range of upholstery and chromatic options available turn Saké into an ode to lightweight.
A creation by Verzelloni’s top designers Lievore Altherr, Nilson is a two-seater sofa collection coming in leather or fabric with two different versions: with high reclinable or low backrest. The sofas’ double nature adds both a classic and casual touch, while the minimalist silhouette is made comfortable by the large pillow-seats, soft backs and generous armrests. Feet are in bronzed painted aluminium cast as standard.
Strong of a long-standing collaboration with Baxter, Draga & Aurel unveiled Bardot on the occasion of the Milano Design Week 2017. By drawing its major inspiration from 1970’s design codes, the sofa features a solid frame built in birch plywood, polyurethane foam filling and springing with woven elastic straps of covered rubber. The edgy, geometrical frame creates an artful game of contrasts with ultra-soft pillows and backrests, while leather plays a major role and softens the sofa’s rational lines.
Antonio Citterio designs Adda for Flexform: a linear and modular seating system built on essential, contemporary aesthetics. The light structure welcomes generously padded goosedown cushions bordered by thick relief stitching. The base in metal tubing is covered in leather or fabric, raised off the floor by metal feet. The soft armrest and back cushions slide over the structure, and are crossed by original lengthwise stitching that produces a gentle hollow on the surface (in fabric or leather): an interesting graphic sign that becomes the distinctive feature of the sofa. The horizontal stitching on the armrest and back cushions follows and accentuates the natural folds creating by the act of sitting.
Legend Sofa is the latest work by Italian architect and designer Fabio Bonfà for Visionnaire. A leather sofa featuring seats, arms and internal backrests softly upholstered and a rigid outer shell enriched with matelassé work. Thanks to its base built in satinized champagne finishing steel, this collection is a delicate yet contemporary piece of furniture.
Details are the name of the game for Natuzzi as well. Ask Maurizio Manzoni and Roberto Tapinassi of Studio Memo, who summed up the brand’s long for balanced design with Kendo, a modern leather sofa defined by essential lines and precious finishes. Its minimalist silhouette is matched with a sophisticated mix of hand-worked materials, while the accurately crafted solid wood is set to enhance the unique metal detailing that outlines the surfaces, embellishing and distinguishing the project.
