Upholstered beds are back. The desire to be in a soft, smooth and almost cocoon-like environment involves both coverings and furniture. Amongst these, upholstered beds are the pieces that stand out the most, due to our increasing need for comfort and intimacy in our contemporary homes. In our bedrooms, for example, the key words are privacy and softness. While living areas and kitchens are increasingly turning into convivial and connected open spaces, the bedroom is reinforcing its role as a private space where we can relax and regenerate. The bed is the true protagonist of our bedrooms and, given our premise, it not only needs to be a design bed but also a very comfortable one. It needs to reflect the quietness we are looking for, it needs to be cosy, soft and super comfy.

The first upholstered bed was designed by Carlo Colombo during Milan’s Salone del Mobile 2017 for Flou, leading firm in the sector, internationally known for the comfort of its designer beds. Amal is a storage bed adding up to Flou’s upholstered beds collection. It’s an important piece of design that plays with the trend of the new classic, for a dreamy, elegant and refined bedroom. This majestic double-bed is characterised by retro soft curves made contemporary by the unusual combination of materials. The wide and voluntarily oversize headboard is anchored by metal trims exalting the padding and the softness. Available in polished gold, matt burnished and polished black nickel, they stylishly match any type of material on the catalogue: fabric, leather or eco-leather if you want to be eco-friendly. Aesthetics and style go together with comfort, which is why, besides the wide choice of materials, you can also have a removable headboard cover.

Richard modern upholstered beds combine minimalism with soft shapes. Designed by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia, they are an extension to a collection that comprises sofas for living areas. This upholstered double-bed has a very essential design and a high bed side running along the bed perimeter. This minimalistic sign, however, does not exclude softness. As a matter of fact, the bed has a sartorial detail of stitching with the insertion of a raw cut profile that highlights the headboard curves. Once again, the elegance of a designer bed meets practicality. The height of the lateral bed sides allows inserting any type of mattress supports, from metal to wooden slatted base or an ‘under mattress’ with springs or slatted base with manual mechanism.

Jetty, designed by Gordon Guillaumier for Alf Da Frè has a more unstructured design. Its masculine style recalls sartorial elegance. The Maltese designer imagined this modern bed as a light, floating pier on water. He transmitted this idea to the project through a simple metallic tubular structure that supports the storage space underneath the mattress and the leather panels of the headboards. The ribbed design gives life to a floating platform in the centre of the room, recalling thin wooden Japanese furniture. Available with or without storage space, these upholstered beds meet the needs of a young audience who loves industrial and raw furniture but who also doesn’t want to give up comfort.

Once again Carlo Colombo. This time, he translated the DNA of another firm in the sector, Poliform – known for its essential and timeless style – into a bed. This is how Chloe was born. An upholstered bed that offers softness and comfort through space, high-quality materials (fabric or leather) and a great attention to detail. The wide upholstered headboard gives a warm, cocoon-like and intimate feeling. As it folds back on the sides, it creates a magical island, a comfortable and reassuring space that can be complemented by coordinated bedside tables.

For a darker mood, we selected Sadoru by Gabriele and Oscar Buratti for Porro. This intimate upholstered bed entirely made in leather (natural or dark brown) is particularly loved for its resistant and easy material, great for home interiors and for the contract sector. High and compact, it has a thin but big bedhead that looks like it’s throwing the bed off balance, although it’s simply an optical illusion. All its details recall tailor-made haute couture. For instance, the strong thicknesses, the double stitches and the sophisticated detail of the large curved headboard.
