Birkedal, “cylindrical” holiday retreat up for rent this fall

Imagine nine cylindrical log-covered units designed as actual cocoons staring at nature straight in the face

The Danish island Møn boasts some truly WOW landscape with breath-taking chalk cliffs and rocky beach. Thus Birkedal, a holiday retreat located a stone’s throw away from the coastline, not only features an original morphological layout but also smoothly intertwines with its immediate surroundings.

The house was first inaugurated in 2016 and is now up for grab through the holiday lettings company Urlaubs Architektur; the property has been 100% designed, built and decorated by Copenhagen-based German architect Jan Hemrik Jansen, who already delivered two further mansions on the same isle.

Stretching over an approximately 270 square-metre area, the house unfolds into 9 cylindrical interconnected blocks with circular rooms and common habitats, each one of them equipped with large bay windows overlooking the landscape. Natural light plays a key role, indeed, by flooding the space with plenty of sun rays.

Bordered by lush birch trees, Birkedal sits on top of a small mound that gently slopes all the way to a wooded area and wide lawns. Such ideal location inspired Jensen to create a proper hideout in the clearing, with both the house and sauna made out from spruce standing out for their uniqueness and still being artfully embedded into the surrounding nature.

Organic-feeling curved walls built in natural pine logs are mixed with deep pre-rusted Corten steel frames: each room was originally planned as an intimate cocoon, so the overall feel is that of entering a very cozy shed. Also, thanks to the house’s astounding indoor-outdoor communication, a set of beds and window seats bring visitors closer to their rural environment.

Inside, the walls are clad in white-painted untreated wooden panels that openly clash with the countryside’s prevailing blue and green nuances. Lastly, the mosaico floors covered in small immaculate pebbles coming straight from the beach nearby give this evocative and contemporary space a raw twist, along with the integrated oak furniture selection and brass fittings.
