Scandinavian furniture, the 4 most beautiful chairs of 2017

Typically Nordic simple lines and light colours for the 4 most beautiful chairs on display at Imm Cologne 2017

With its simple lines and light colours Scandinavian furniture has once again taken centre stage at Imm Cologne 2017. Whereas most Italian firms regard Imm as a venue for consolidating collections already presented elsewhere, for Scandinavian brands the German event is always an excellent showcase for launching all their new furnishings and complements.

From the big names, now famous, to the smaller firms — the latter often with brilliant creative insight and led by emerging, and very determined, designers — each made-in-Scandinavia brand launchedat least one new chair at the fair. In fact, although designing the umpteenth new chair is an ever-harder feat, it represents one of the most stimulating challenges for a creative.

Among all those we saw in the various stands, we have chosen the most beautiful 4 Nordic-style chairs at Imm Cologne 2017. These are chairs that perfectly embody the “hygge” style, that very Scandinavian way of living in a relaxed and welcoming environment, without renouncing the pleasure of a stylish detail.

The Design House Stockholm group celebrates the beauty of Swedish handcrafted furniture with the new Torso chair. Designed by Lisa Hilland, its leather backrest is realised in Tuscany, whereas the wooden seat and the metal frame are made in Sweden in various colours.

The new Workshop chair is wholly Danish: Cecilie Manz conceived it for the Scandinavian design firm Muuto, and chose light tones for the lacquering, from ice-white to light peach.

The Catch line, by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon for the &tradition group, plays with shapes. The backrest becomes round and the armrests turn maxi-sized for more comfort.

Finally, the perfect mix between Scandinavian style and design elegance is summarised by the Hven chair by Anton Björsing for Skagerak, an eco-oriented, family-owned company that manufactures Nordic furniture in its northern Denmark headquarters.
