An open space apartment overlooking the sea: check out the latest project by architectural firm PIA – Perotta Iberto Architetti, which was freshly appointed to renovate a house located in the beating heart of Lerici, Liguria, right by the stunning Golfo dei Poeti.

A modern restyling mixing essential touches and pastel colours, the new intervention manages to enhance the property’s sharp angles and perspective distortions, whilst adding a keenly picked selection of 1970s and 1980s vintage furniture.

The apartment is set on the first floor of a regular condo, and yet boasts sweeping views of the sea.

PIA’s architectural response focuses on remodelling the spatial layout and replacing the preexisting fragmented habitats with an airy, breezy, partitionless open space with total-white furnishings. The reshaped area unfolds diagonally so to comprise the living room, lounge and kitchen in a feast of picture windows opening directly onto the sea.

The original partition wall vanishes to create visual continuity between the dining area and open plan kitchen, both being separated by a custom-made wooden shelving system of modern taste, structured on a diagonal sequence of slender floor-to-ceiling supports – made of bleached oak wood – alternating with fixed and sliding pictured glazed sections and ultra-thin stainless steel shelves.

Right on the far side of this sea-view open space flat, the vestibule serving as an entryway to the house’s main core turns into a key player thanks to the use of powder blue tones on both the ceiling and walls, in order to highlight a contrasting play of colours and edges.

Such chromatic uniformity is also assured by the bedrooms and facility rooms’ doors that perfectly align with the wall surface.

The property features oak wooden flooring with herringbone pattern – by developing diagonally from the antechamber to the dining area, it provides a visual bridge between the entrance and the French doors in the living facing the Gulf below.

The mix of discreet spatial interventions and homogenous material palette offers a neutral background for the owners’ 1970s and 1980s vintage furniture collection to stand out.

Made of strictly total-white pieces, the selection includes original design must-haves like the iconic Vitra chairs by Charles & Ray Eames.
