The Wing, a ladies-only club for working women
A network of co-working and community spaces for women in New York
A hall in The Wing ladies-only club, New York
To define The Wing as a new co-working space in New York would be rather simplistic. The project’s basic idea means to become something far more complex than a simple place to work in. As Audrey Gelman, The Wing co-founder together with Lauren Kassan explained to us, “…we created The Wing because we believe that women deserve a place entirely for themselves, where they can not only work but also connect, share ideas and find a welcoming, stimulating meeting place, equipped with all the conveniences that make it a perfectly enjoyable venue”. That’s why the two young entrepreneurs have chosen Chiara de Rege as their appointed interior designer. And that’s why we can find her unmistakable style, featuring simple, brightly illumined settings, pastel colors and natural materials, in the interiors of The Wing in SoHo.
The Wing offers women a 930sqm area including several halls with different kinds of seats, worktops to work with their private PCs, and a big living area, where it is possible to work as well as eat a snack and plan informal meetings. For those who need more privacy, The Wing offers private meeting halls, rooms to make phone calls without disturbing others, and many different spaces dedicated to business meetings. Just because this concept has been designed as a place specifically dedicated to women with all their small everyday needs, there is also a make-up room equipped with small armchairs, mirrors and beauty products, including a breast-feeding room. And, of course, a bar area where to enjoy a cup of coffee and a little chat. The place is further enhanced by the presence of a big library featuring books exclusively written by women authors, and embellished by fresh flowers and potted plants placed everywhere.
What kind of female goers does The Wing attract, though? Many different types, from freelance professionals to university teachers, from fashion bloggers to middle-aged ladies who have decided to go back into business with a new start-up company. Like all private clubs, The Wing is open only to registered women who may however invite friends and colleagues to discover its many benefits. Inaugurated in October 2016, The Wing was an immediate, stunning success. “We hoped in a good response” says Lauren Kassan “although we did not expect such a huge success. Today we have 1.500 registered women and will soon open two further headquarters – one in Dumbo, another New York district, and one in Washington”. Needless to say, there is a long waiting list before enrolling by now. Because working and networking in such a stylish place has become any New York lady’s dream.
