International design at INTRO/NY

SoHo: 12 brands presented by small pond and designjunction

One of the newer entries to the New York Design Week show circuit is INTRO/NY. A collaborative production between the design consultancy small pond and London-based designjunction, INTRO/NY presented a fresh mix of 12 international and American design talents on a quiet, tree-lined street in SoHo.

Pops of color and fun tabletop objects filled the sunny venue - a friendly greeting from the independent bike company, Tokyobike, signaled a fun adventure from the moment we stepped through the door. Designed with an emphasis on comfort over speed, the bikes are a lightweight city bike perfect for cruising from the bookshop to brunch.

Open weave leather baskets filled with market goods from by AMT and Los Angeles bag designers Mimot Studio are wonderful carry-alls in varying sizes. Handmade in Los Angeles, the bags feature warm copper-plated rivets and colorful cross-stitched rubber wires. The Strap basket collection has a simplicity that works in any room of the home--from fruit basket to magazine holder, firewood stash to toiletry kit. The newest iteration of the project is a set of baskets for indoor planters that add a hand-made touch to the standard terra-cotta pot - and a handle for rearranging your indoor garden.

Toronto-based Castor Design presented a collection of all black accessories ranging from wall mirrors to lighting. The standout from the "None More Black" collection is a modern oil lamp, a collaboration with Harnisch lamps, Canada's oldest gas lamp manufacturers. Using Harnisch's knowledge and production methods, Castor's stripped down version of an archetypal oil lamp uses both black chrome on the cylindrical body and a flat black powder coat for the holder for a nice visual contrast.

New Zealand manufacturers, Resident, showed their newest collection of lighting and seating, including a new size and finish for their popular Hex pendant. As its name suggests, the Hex 750 Brass is a simple hexagonal overhead LED light created from brass electroplated aluminum with a hand brushed finish. The Fibre Light Bottle is constructed entirely from carbon fibre, a material more commonly found in transportation than contemporary lighting. The strength and light weight of the material makes it an ideal, if unusual choice for pendant lighting and designer Jamie McLellan executes the sparse design elegantly. Pick Up Sticks, that ubiquitous childhood game, is manifested in a solid oak armchair frame with a separate, but equally important, upholstered component. With options for upholstery and frame finish, this design from Simon James is both fun and functional.

Intro/NY is a smart survey of an increasingly global design dialogue. With complimentary coffee, a Core77 reading room, and twelve design houses showing their work in a bright and airy space, the show was a nice respite from the barrage of brands and booths and a welcome addition to the New York Design Week itinerary.
