The most interesting discoveries we made at ICFF in New York

Enjoy the latest trends and a new American voice: here is our selection of the 15 best brands we spotted in New York

ICFF 2016 speaks American English. The annual contemporary furniture fair brings great designs to New York and also confirms a widely buzzed-about emerging trend: design Made in USA is getting huge. From May 14th to 17th, 2016, local exhibitors have shown a bold, well-aware and independent personality free of any international influence.

We discussed with the creative team of TJ O’Keefe, the 1982-born designer who first founded his firm back in 2010, about a new American voice. “We started late our design affair here in the US, but now we are definitely on a roll. ICFF hosts many young and independent talents who are also personally involved in the product development and manufacturing of their own creations. They boast a unique style and are not afraid of make their voice heard.”

Chicago-based brand TJ O’Keefe unveiled a collection of abstract design objects made out from iron rods. Same inspiration for Los-Angeles company Bend and its latest line of coloured chairs and coffee tables.

Coming straight from the North Carolina, Elijah Leed Studio has debuted in the furniture world with a bang: despite a solid and traditionally American style, the brand's selection of leather and wood pieces is strong of a unique and modern touch. Matter-Made, the New York based contemporary design store and manufacturer, has launched a more contemporary USA design – see Discus, its truly innovative extended lighting family –, while Brooklyn-based Souda, halfway between these two brands, charmingly mixes modern design and more classical echoes.

Still, there is a lot more you would better keep an eye on: Emeco, the historic furnishing company first established in 1944, has snatched the ICFF Editors Awards 2016 honour for this years Best Furniture System. Rich Brilliant Willing, the contemporary lighting design manufacturer based in New York, was shortlisted for the NYCxDESIGN Awards; and last but not least, the kitchen and bathroom system brand Watermark Designs was author of a typically American design of industrial inspiration.

As for the foreign exhibitors: Japanese high-tech brand Nissha has launched Mui, an interactive user-interface design for lighting and thermostat controls. Apart from the delicate creations from New Zealand design brand Resident, along with Tom Dixon’s unmistakable style, the Republic of Fritz Hansen has introduced the innovative VIA57 lounge chair by Bjarke Ingles (BIG) (read more at → La lounge chair Via57).
