A standard IKEA kitchen entirely clad in shiny brass.

You heard it right: Danish fashion designer Stine Goya has recently asked brand Reform to create a fully customised kitchen unit to be installed in her new office and showroom near Copenhagen’s Royal Palace. So here came the idea of upgrading a bunch of IKEA cabinetry into a polished brass bonanza.

Looking gold and flashy, the kitchen layout revolves around the Swedish company’s standard cupboards and side panels, now decked with plenty of brass finishes.

Indeed, Reform was faced with the challenge of hacking IKEA standard cabinetry by kicking off from a very basic ingredient – industrial modular cupboards –, and later adding a fine architect’s touch.

Stine Goya, founder of her namesake fashion maison specialising in colourful sculptural clothes with charming prints, got inspired by local designer Christina Meyer Bengtsson, who back in 2017 realised in partnership with Reform a customised kitchen coming in grey, mauve and brass, with a handful of steel finishes.

Especially fond of colours, the fashion designer came up with the question: why not to make a complete kitchen like this?

The result is an unmatchable environment built on vintage sepia tones, half 1960s half Goldfinger, with brass side panels and handles artfully contrasting with the black laminate countertop and oven.

The kitchen’s walls were painted pale yellow and matched with bright parquet flooring. The cherry on top? A nonchalant plum-coloured corridor.

Goya scattered a few, much loved items here and there: a portrait of artist Cathrine Rabem Davidsen, several vases with floral patterns, and a glass plate spotted at the Milan Design Week 2017 – a “tremendously inspiring design fair”, she says.
