New Year’s Eve at the spa? 10 locations to start the new year taking care of yourself
Our selection of dreamy locations around Italy and abroad to start 2018 taking care of your body and mind
If loving yourself is among your new year’s resolutions, you should start by spending its first day at the spa, possibly somewhere with breath-taking sceneries. We selected 10 dreamy locations where you can spend New Year’s Eve focusing on your wellness.
Roomers, urban hotel by Piero Lissoni, is in the heart of Baden Baden, a German city known for being an important thermal and mineral-therapeutic centre. Its high-altitude spa is not hidden in the basement, as usual, but it’s located on the second last floor and surrounded by terraces and pools with panoramic views.
At Waldhaus Flims Grand Hotel, 140 km away from Zurich, New Year’s Eve will be celebrated in the Art Nouveau dance hall with “Party like Gatsby - Time to drink Champagne”, a ‘20s themed party. Its 2800-square-metre spa was the movie set for Sorrentino’s “Youth - La Giovinezza”.
Alpine luxury next to Peter Zumthor’s quartzite spa in Vals. Studio Morphosis restyled 20 rooms at Hotel 7132 involving Zumthor himself, Tadao Anno and Kengo Kuma. They took inspiration from the stunning surrounding landscape and designed rooms with natural materials, especially local wood, creating a unique tactile and chromatic experience.
For those of you who prefer to spend New Year’s Eve at an Italian spa, you cannot miss the historic 2000-year-old baths in Bormio. The options are two, both owned by QC Terme: Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi, with liberty architecture and Hotel Bagni Vecchi, a unique atmosphere given by the great panoramic location overlooking Stelvio National Park.
Hotel des Berges in Illhaeusern, Alsace, has a 5-star spa. Willow Spa is inside a 7-metre-high contemporary barn with tall glass walls. The designer is Jouin Manku, who was also in charge of the restyling of the 3 Michelin starred restaurant.
Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda is an award-winning structure in Gargnano. The 3800-square-metre hotel is a true temple of wellness to regenerate your body and mind. The indoor pool is called “La Luna nel lago” (moon on the lake) and there’s a wellness package bringing you to six different types of saunas and five relax areas.
Find Swiss Bliss at The Cambrian Adelboden, former Grand Hotel Regina (since 1905), which has been restyled in 2007. This perfect alpine resort combines British lifestyle and Swiss quality. Its 800-square-metre spa develops on two levels and has a heated outdoor pool facing the mountains, so close that you’ll feel like you can touch them. No wonder why the Times listed it among the world’s most beautiful outdoor pools.
Surrounded by the Tuscan hills, near Siena, Adler Therae Spa & Relais is a unique property surrounded by unspoiled nature. The waters of its indoor and outdoor pools, rich with minerals and active substances, will heal your body and mind.
Stay at Apogée Courchevel in French Savoy for alpine pleasure and an unforgettable experience. The ski slopes can easily be reached with a 40-metre-long treadmill and the comfortable rooms designed by Joseph Dirand and India Mahdavi are pure luxury. The penthouse, in particular, is worth mentioning: 300-square-metre, indoor private spa and outdoor Jacuzzi overlooking the valley. The hotel spa has a wonderful pool with blue mosaics and it cuddles its guests with La Prairie products.
Let’s stay in France, not too far away from Megeve, where nine farms have been renovated following tradition and authentic luxury. Les Fermes de Marie, 70 rooms and suites and a private chalet. The cherry on top is their “Pure Altitude” spa, with a dreamy pool and various wellness packages.
