This year, the 5VIE district at Milan’s Design Week has one more reason to celebrate the arrival of the Salone del Mobile 2018. Make that 5. Now in its fifth year at the international event, Fuorisalone, the district seems to offer a more impressive calendar of events each year. Maintaining focus on its core values: history, culture, and innovation, the group sets out to deliver big once again.
In a fascinating area of the city with events hosted in some of the most incredible locations, 5VIE attracts thousands each year. On display in historic buildings like Palazzo Turati and Palazzo Litta or small ateliers transformed into intimate exhibition spaces, the wide range of events makes this a fantastically versatile district. 2018 is no different as organizers begin setting up to showcase young talent and new creative languages in the most beautiful corners of the city. Everything from product design to experimental art will be featured with social and ethical undertones.
New additions to the 5VIE district at the 2018 Salone include top echelon curators that have been called to create original projects for the occasion.
In Via Cesare Correnti 14, Canadian Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte unveils Unsighted, freeing designers from limits of context, space, and content. Meanwhile, Arcadia, the immersive and sensorial exhibit from Sara Ricciardi will be curated by Alice Stori Liechtenstein.
Elsewhere, the latest show curated by Milan design star and Fuorisalone favorite, Maria Cristina Didero, Vegan Design - Or the Art of Reduction, showcases pieces from Erez Nevi Pana, a vegan purist working only with non-animal materials. Over at the Panorama exhibit, curated by Annalisa Rosso with work by Valentina Cameranesi, industrial elements are revisited to forge a shocking atmosphere.
The former Meazza space, once a historic city symbol after the war, takes center stage for the upcoming Salone del Mobile. Among various projects, 5VIE gives homage to the creativity of Nanda Vigo with unique works and installations.
Not to miss are two new entries: Lexus at the Cavallerizze of the National Museum of Science and Technology, and Lensvelt in the courtyard of the Diocesan Museum.
A few of the now established classics return for another year. Among them, Seletti Design Pride, various presentations inside Palazzo Litta, and the much-anticipated exhibit from Dutch collective, Masterly - The Dutch in Milano, at Palazzo Turati.
On the 15th and 16th of April, the 5VIE district will welcome Milan Design Week early with It’s Circular, a forum dedicated to circular economy and design. The goal is to discuss possible future scenarios with an economic system capable of regenerating on its own.
At the Colonne di San Lorenzo/Piazza Vetra, catch Trashpresso, the first mobile industrial facility recycling fabrics and plastics. Capable of producing 10 square meters of tiling every 40 minutes, it recycles 8 plastic bottles to create 1 tile. Finally, a project looking to design as a means to social ends, Stanze Sospese, presents a line of furnishings made from recycled plastic to enrich the lives of those in imprisonment.
