The latest trends for the bedroom are here. It was the beds at Milan’s Salone del Mobile 2018 that made a mark with a wide range of styles.

Projects presented came from some of the most important brands in the sector, showcasing a revived interest in comfort with a look to steal the show.

Whether it helps set the mood or simply follows a pragmatic approach, a design bed should express both comfort and wellness while representing the essence of the bedroom. Times have changed, and the bed has become an item to put on display. Bedrooms are no longer just private, reserved spaces to sleep, but a place to chat with friends, use your smartphone, or watch series.

From container beds to the redesign of famous pieces that have led the pack, we found four key trends at this year’s Salone del Mobile: upholstered beds with a bold effect amplify the sensation of privacy and softness that’s typical of the night area; re-editions of iconic models; thin, slender beds that enchant with an almost oriental essentiality; super functional beds that stand the test of time.

Starting with the latter, these opening beds maximize storage space, taking advantage of the area underneath the bed which would otherwise be wasted.

Bolzan Letti, however, proposes the model with a slight difference. The Kate bed (pictured above) is one step ahead, realized in steel with a technologically advanced approach, it unites elegance with functionality. With respect to the lateral opening beds, this model is even better for small bedrooms and is among our top picks when it comes to saving space.

The Treviso-based company eliminates the unattractive track which can also be a pain to maintain, making the entire model more clean and linear. The pillows on the retractable headboard are another unique touch that underline the sleek elegance of this simple bed.

Caccaro interprets functionality in a new way. The unusual container bed, Bag (pictured above), by Monica Graffeo, welcomes a series of small objects in a pocket opening of the headboard, like a giant clutch. The simple and intelligent idea was created to keep everyday items — books, cellphones, glasses, and everything else that gets lost in the nightstand — right with the bed itself.

Caccaro once again reflects on the new social role of the bed with Groove (pictured above), which features an entire system without a headboard, rather than a simple standalone product. By hiding this traditional element, the entire structure is reinterpreted.

The series of unusual beds are framed by the wall itself, where a multifunctional shelving bar is attached with support for various accessories like upholstered backrests or hanging hooks. All accessories are completely optional and mobile and can be organized as you wish. A built-in audio and lighting system are integrated which can easily be connected to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth.

A product capable of adapting and re-innovating itself is key for the newer generations. Although not entirely functional, the ability to simply vary the aesthetic quality of the bed has earned this model extra points.

A design from Meneghello & Paolelli Associati, Frick was designed for Twils to give life to a versatile and innovative system, created especially for a new generation of millennials.

The eclectic series of beds features minimal feel with a headboard as a quasi-moodboard through the combination of elements and fabrics. Attention is focused on the younger generation, looking for a metropolitan bed with a minimal aesthetic with a versatile backrest that can change color or material in a continuous mix of endless possibilities.

More than streamlined functionality in both aesthetic and use, minimal beds are yet another must-have for 2018. Both models Bend and Jack, are signed by Zanellato Bortotto studio for Bolzan Letti. The former (pictured above) is part of a modern series with minimal lines, which fuses two diverse materials for an essential uniqueness. The iconic lines of curved wood in the upholstered structure meet the iron base with a coarse and refined fabric for a beautiful ensemble.

Jack (pictured above) is a bed with a linear profile, whose cutting graphic lines are subtle yet distinguished. The iron bed is characterized by a structure of separate elements, easily assembled, with a reversible headboard and footboard in either leather or fabric.

The new brand from group Gervasoni, Letti & Co, entrusted Paola Navone to pair a bold look with the dreamy dimension. Dot and Nest are two varieties of a new generation of upholstered beds. Versatile, soft, and welcoming, thanks to the quilted cladding, these models are transformed into uniquely elegant solutions that revolve around total comfort. Dot (pictured above), reinterprets the classic raised bed with a light and easy style. Meanwhile, Nest (cover photo), features a curved headboard to create a cocoon-like feel.

The Flou beds give priority to puffy dimensions this year. Mandarine (pictured above), signed by Emanuela Garbin and Mario Dell’Orto, is a refined bed with oriental leanings that looks great in both classic and modern environments. The base consists of a horizontal seam along the entire perimeter, visually breaking up the structure’s considerable height. The same technique is also utilized in the headboard at about 2/3 of the height.

Meanwhile, New Bond (pictured above), named after the famous London street, was designed by Matteo Nunziati for Flou. Working on the headboard in a different way, the refined model in leather or fabric presents an original feature to showcase the sartorial prowess of the company after 40 years of production. A series of “belts” are intersected in two separate points of the headboard, which serve as the decorative elements in an otherwise streamlined bed.

The Treviso-based company Twils presented Academy Piuma (pictured above) with a design by R&D. The reinterpretation of a classic bed under a contemporary key takes on a soft effect that accentuates the harmony of forms while confirming the brand’s quality craftsmanship.

Attico (pictured above), features soft forms available in different sizes, coverings, and types of frames and headboards. Functionality meets comfort with an inclined headboard and elegant backrest pillows.

Re-editions were present thanks to Flou, who for their 40th anniversary elaborated on the reflection of time as a resource and a luxury in today’s world. Sparking a dialogue between the past and present, the company takes familiar materials and transforms them into unique and inimitable products that become a part of our everyday environments. Old and new are paired to tell a tale of style, beauty, and originality. Among the iconic beds on display, Tadao by Vico Magistretti (pictured above), is distinguished for its use of raw wood slabs which help build a particular structure flowing from the base to the headboard. Reproduced each year in limited quantities according to available materials, each product is one of a kind.

Founded in 1978, the company first released Nathalie (pictured above). The iconic bed designed once again by Vico Magistretti is a testament to the cultural and social changes that marked the 70’s. As the forefather of the modern textile bed, the celebrated design has been reproduced in a limited edition with just 299 models according to one of the first versions of the classic.
